MPLS is an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)–specified framework that provides for the efficient designation, routing, forwarding, and switching of traffic flows through the network.

MPLS performs the following functions:

• Specifies mechanisms to manage traffic flows of various granularities, such as flows between different hardware, machines, or even flows between different applications
• Remains independent of the Layer-2 and Layer-3 protocols
• Provides a means to map IP addresses to simple, fixed-length labels used by different packet-forwarding and packet-switching technologies
• Interfaces routing protocols such as resource reservation protocol (RSVP) and open shortest path first (OSPF)
• Supports the IP, ATM, and frame-relay Layer-2 protocols

Mainly, there are three flavours of MPLS based Virtual Private Networks (VPN):

MPLS VPN Networks:

Layer 3 VPNs:

With L3 VPNs , Orion participates in the customer’s Layer 3 routing. The customer’s CE router at each of his sites speaks a routing protocol such as BGP or OSPF to the Orion’s underlying provider’s PE router, and the IP prefixes advertised at each customer site are carried across the provider network. L3 VPNs are attractive to customers who want to leverage Orion’s technical expertise to insure efficient site-to-site routing.

Layer 2 VPNs:

Orion interconnects the customer sites via the Layer 2 technology – usually ATM, Frame Relay, or Ethernet. The customer implements whatever Layer 3 protocol he wants to run, with no participation by Orion’s underlying network provider at that level. L2 VPNs are attractive to customers who want complete control of their own routing.

Virtual Private LAN Service:

VPLS makes the network look like a single Ethernet switch from the customer’s viewpoint. The attraction of VPLS to customers is that they can make their WAN look just like their local campus- or building-scope networks, using a single technology (Ethernet) that is cheap and well understood. Unlike traditional Metro Ethernet services built around actual Ethernet switches, Orion can connect VPLS customers from regional all the way up to global scales. So a customer with sites in London, Dubai, Bangalore, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and New York can connect all his sites with what appears to be a single Ethernet switch.

Two options are available, fixed rate which enables our customers to anticipate costs more effectively or an alternatively usage option. If usage fluctuates over the month, the usage-based option ensures that the customer is invoiced according to actual monthly usage.

The E10 Internet usage product provides full bandwidth capabilities for the customer to use anytime, all the time. E10 provides a full 10 Mbps of bandwidth; the customer is charged a small access fee plus their usage starting at 0Mbps over the month. Addition usage is calculated based on industry standard 95th percentile calculation.
